Set up the Fluance RT84 without confusing the phono path
The current Piano Black RT84 package is an RT84T with an Ortofon 2M Blue, aluminum platter and rubber mat. This guide follows the shared RT82/RT83/RT84 user manual and the current product page; it is a researched checklist, not a setup test performed on a unit.
1. Check the package and place the deck
Before assembly, compare the offer's exact finish and components with its description. The current RT84 page describes the 2M Blue/aluminum-platter version and states that the model changed from an earlier Red-cartridge/acrylic-platter package. The current RT84T Piano Black and RT84W Natural Walnut are separate finish identifiers. If a used or open-box offer is unclear, do not assume it matches the current page. Fluance's shared manual lists the turntable and dust cover, metal platter with belt, rubber mat, headshell with stylus, counterweight, 45 adapter, power adapter, RCA cable, ground wire, bubble level, hinges and motor pulley cap.
Put the chassis on a firm, stable surface with enough room around it for RCA plugs, your hands and the dust-cover travel. Fluance lists adjustable feet and includes a bubble level. The current product page says 16.5 inches wide and 14.25 inches deep, while the shared manual gives 16.5 × 13.75 inches and a 5.5-inch height. Since those published depths differ, plan around the larger value and check the exact version rather than fitting the shelf to the smaller number.
2. Assemble with the stylus protected
Follow the model manual in sequence: install and balance the counterweight, secure the headshell, fit the belt and platter, place the rubber mat, attach the dust-cover hinges, level the turntable, then connect the cables and correct power adapter. Keep the stylus guard on while handling the cartridge if the supplied unit permits it, and do not let the stylus touch the platter or work surface. The manual warns that incorrect arm balance can damage records or the stylus.
The manual's chart sets the stock 2M Blue tracking force to 1.8 g and gives 1.8 as the matching starting anti-skate value. Its broader RT84 cartridge range is 1.6–2.0 g. Use the scale and indicator instructions in the exact manual; the balancing step requires setting the indicator ring separately from turning the counterweight. Recheck the setup after leveling, moving the deck or changing the cartridge.
3. Choose one phono route
- Receiver or integrated amplifier PHONO: connect the RT84's RCA outputs and ground lead to the receiver's PHONO input and ground terminal. The receiver supplies phono equalization; a second phono stage in this chain is not normally appropriate.
- Powered speakers with a line input: connect the RT84 to a compatible external phono stage, then route the stage's line output to the powered speakers. The speakers must provide amplification. Check whether the stage and speaker manuals require the second ground lead between them.
- Amplifier and passive speakers: put the external phono stage before the amplifier/receiver's line-level input; the amplifier then drives passive speakers.
The RT84 has no built-in phono preamp. A normal AUX, CD or powered-speaker line input alone is not a substitute for a PHONO input or external stage. Grounding depends on the chosen components, so follow all of their connection diagrams and avoid connecting two phono stages in series.
4. Use the manual routine and stop feature accurately
The RT84 plays 33⅓ and 45 RPM records; Fluance does not list 78-RPM playback. Unlock the arm, raise the cue lever, place the stylus at the desired start and lower the lever gently. The auto-stop switch controls a platter stop; it does not lift or return the tonearm. With auto-stop enabled, the manual estimates about 30 seconds before the platter stops after a record finishes and warns that some records may not trigger it correctly. Turn the speed control to off when the deck is not in use.
5. Verify the exact revision
Before relying on a listing, confirm whether it is RT84T Piano Black or RT84W Natural Walnut and whether it includes the current 2M Blue and aluminum platter with rubber mat. Fluance's product page notes an earlier RT84 package with a 2M Red and acrylic platter. Also allow more than the listed footprint for cover movement, reach and cable bends. For cartridge replacement, use Fluance's named Stylus 2M Blue or check its current compatibility guide rather than assuming a random cartridge fits.
