Fluance RT84 Piano Black — earlier 2M Red / acrylic package review

A documented earlier U.S. RT84T configuration with Ortofon 2M Red and a 3 lb acrylic platter. It has no built-in phono stage; verify the actual package because the same RT84T identifier later shipped with different components.

Earlier RT84 package. The later/current RT84 uses a 2M Blue and aluminum platter; the published RT84T item identifier and UPC do not distinguish the versions. Verify the actual cartridge and platter before buying.

A useful fit for

A source-based fit candidate for someone who specifically seeks the original RT84 Red/acrylic configuration, can use a compatible moving-magnet receiver PHONO input or add a phono stage, and accepts manually cueing the tonearm.

The main tradeoff

The package-specific manual remains unavailable: the recoverable Fluance manual v2.2 from 2022 documents the later 2M Blue/metal package, not this earlier edition. The earlier package reused RT84T and the published UPC, and no current seller offer is verified; check the actual cartridge, platter and contents before treating any listing as this configuration.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I include this earlier RT84 with a receiver that has a PHONO input?

Yes, if you deliberately include earlier packages and the receiver PHONO input is compatible with the moving-magnet 2M Red. The archived Fluance page says the turntable has no built-in preamp and lists RCA output and a ground terminal. Check the actual unit and grounding instructions; a compatible receiver, amplifier and speakers remain necessary.

Can this earlier RT84 connect directly to ordinary powered-speaker line inputs?

No. The archived package is phono-level and Fluance says a separate phono preamp is required unless the amplifier or receiver provides a suitable PHONO input. For powered speakers with LINE/AUX inputs, place a compatible phono stage before the speaker inputs; verify the actual ground leads and stage instructions.

Does the historical RT84 stop the platter at record end, and is the arm automatic?

The 2019 product page lists auto-stop and a cueing lever, but the exact older manual is no longer available from its archived download link. Treat the stop as a platter feature, not proof of automatic arm lift or return; verify the individual deck and its instructions before relying on it.

Assessment scope. This is a source-based review of the earlier RT84 configuration with an Ortofon 2M Red cartridge and acrylic platter, not the current Blue/aluminum version. Fluance’s current RT84 page describes the change after launch, and its archived U.S. product page from July 2019 identifies the earlier package. That dated page lists the item as RT84T; it does not establish a distinct old-version SKU or when the change happened. More importantly, both versions use the RT84T identifier and the same published UPC, so neither code alone tells a buyer which parts are in a particular box. [Compare Fluance’s current RT84 page](https://www.fluance.com/rt84t-reference-high-fidelity-vinyl-turntable-black-gloss) with [the archived 2019 product page](https://web.archive.org/web/20190717112725id_/https://www.fluance.com/rt84t-reference-high-fidelity-vinyl-turntable-black-gloss).

Its distinguishing parts are the cartridge and platter

The archived product page names an Ortofon 2M Red moving-magnet cartridge with an elliptical stylus and a 3-pound acrylic platter. It lists a belt-drive, servo-controlled design with 33⅓ and 45 RPM selection, a cueing lever and auto-stop. The same page specifies a tracking-force range of 1.6–2.0 grams, a 5.5 mV phono-level output, RCA leads and a ground terminal. The turntable has no built-in phono preamp: choose a compatible receiver or integrated amplifier PHONO input, or add an external phono stage before a powered-speaker line input or amplifier. The old package is not a shortcut to a direct line-level connection.

Fluance’s present page says the RT84 changed from the 2M Red to a 2M Blue and from acrylic to aluminum. The later package also lists a rubber mat, whereas the earlier archived page says the acrylic platter needs no mat. This is a meaningful edition distinction, not a cosmetic finish change. Do not transfer the current RT84’s cartridge, manual, dimensions, included accessories or photograph to a listing for the earlier package just because the model name looks familiar.

Manual operation and record-end stop are different things

The historical page lists a cueing lever and auto-stop, but it does not establish fully automatic start, arm lift or return. The original manual link preserved on that page now returns an error. A later Fluance manual v2.2 archived in 2022 identifies the RT84 with a 2M Blue and metal platter, so it does not establish the earlier package’s setup instructions. Treat the stop as a listed platter function—not as hands-off tonearm operation—and verify the physical unit and its own instructions before relying on it.

For a receiver PHONO input, confirm that it accepts the 2M Red’s moving-magnet cartridge and follow the turntable’s grounding instructions. For powered speakers with LINE or AUX inputs, the signal chain needs an external phono stage between the RCA/ground outputs and the speakers. An amplifier for passive speakers may likewise need a separate stage if it lacks a suitable PHONO input. The turntable does not itself provide speakers or power amplification.

Dimensions and package contents need edition-level verification

The 2019 page lists a body measuring 16.5 inches wide, 5.5 inches high and 13.75 inches deep, with a weight of 16.76 pounds. Treat those as historical published body dimensions, not the operating clearance needed for the dust cover, cables, arm access or surrounding equipment. The current revised RT84 page publishes a different body depth, reinforcing why a buyer should check the exact unit rather than rely on a family-level number.

The historical package list names the deck, cover and hinges, bubble level, 2M Red headshell, counterweight, acrylic platter and belt, power adapter, RCA cable, 45 adapter, pulley cap and manual. It also lists two three-foot ground wires, while the current revised package list names one; the manufacturer’s change note does not explain that difference. Ask the seller for clear photographs of the actual cartridge, platter and box contents. A title saying RT84, item code RT84T, or the shared UPC is not enough to identify this earlier parts package.

Who should consider this version?

This version is relevant only when the earlier Red/acrylic combination itself is wanted and the buyer can confirm that the specific unit has those parts. The source record does not verify a current U.S. offer, price, stock, warranty status or seller support for this historical configuration. The archived page’s out-of-stock label belongs only to its July 2019 capture and says nothing about availability now. A manufacturer image linked by that 2019 page was recovered at its original product-file path and visually checked this cycle: it shows the Piano Black body, red cartridge assembly and clear acrylic platter described here. The original package-specific manual remains unavailable; this review does not borrow setup instructions from the later Blue/aluminum manual.

For the current 2M Blue/aluminum package, see the separate Fluance RT84 Piano Black assessment. To compare this earlier configuration with current models, use the finder with earlier configurations included, then inspect the actual offer and package carefully. This is a bounded documentary assessment—not a claim of ownership, listening tests or hands-on measurements.
