Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can I use the current RT84 with a receiver that has a PHONO input?
Yes, when the receiver's PHONO input supports the supplied moving-magnet Ortofon 2M Blue. Connect the RCA outputs and ground lead as the manual shows; the receiver PHONO input supplies the phono stage. The receiver and external speakers still provide the system amplification and sound output.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I connect the RT84 straight to powered speakers?
Not to ordinary line inputs without a separate phono stage. The RT84 has no built-in preamp, so connect its RCA and ground lead to a compatible external phono stage, then route the stage's line output to powered speakers. Check the grounding and input instructions for each component.
Explore this need in the finder →How is the current RT84 package different from RT83 or RT85?
Fluance currently lists the RT84 with a 2M Blue, aluminum platter and rubber mat. The RT83 includes a 2M Red with an aluminum platter and rubber mat; the RT85 has a 2M Blue with an acrylic platter. Fluance also says the RT84 changed after launch, so verify an older or used RT84 package rather than assuming these current parts are present.
The Fluance RT84 suits a buyer who wants the Ortofon 2M Blue package without an acrylic platter. Current US Piano Black RT84T pairs that cartridge with aluminum and a rubber mat, runs at 33⅓ or 45 RPM, and has no phono preamp. A receiver PHONO input or separate stage is therefore necessary.
Identify the version before comparing it
The current Piano Black page identifies the RT84T with a moving-magnet 2M Blue cartridge. Fluance says its RT84 had a component revision after launch: the earlier package had a 2M Red and acrylic platter, while the current page lists a 2M Blue and aluminum platter. Treat those parts as a meaningful configuration change, not as interchangeable listing details. A used or older boxed RT84 may not match the current specifications below; check the platter, mat, cartridge and seller's exact contents rather than inferring the package from “RT84” alone.
There are two finish-specific US routes in the current page: Piano Black / RT84T and Natural Walnut / RT84W. Both name the RT84, 2M Blue and aluminum platter. The black page, like RT84 Walnut, declares the Walnut URL as canonical, but its title, visible finish, item identifier and photograph remain black. I keep these finish identities separate instead of treating the shared canonical as evidence of a duplicate. The Walnut page appears separately below so the color is not confused with the black edition.

Choose the cartridge package, not an untested sound promise
The RT84's clearest distinction from the RT83 is its installed cartridge. Fluance lists the RT83 with a 2M Red and the RT84 with a 2M Blue; RT84 keeps an aluminum platter and rubber mat, while RT85 pairs the 2M Blue with an acrylic platter. Fluance describes the supplied Blue as a nude elliptical stylus and lists the Stylus 2M Blue replacement. This helps identify the package you want, but it is not evidence of a universal audible advantage. This assessment is not a listening test.
The shared Reference manual maps the RT84 to the 2M Blue and recommends 1.8 g tracking force with the same anti-skate starting value. It also lists a 1.6–2.0 g force range, a 5.0–7.5 g cartridge-weight range and a half-inch mount. Fluance's cartridge guidance gives a 20-degree vertical tracking angle for the Reference platform and says the 2M Red, 2M Silver and 2M Blue share a cartridge body; do not extend that advice to an unlisted cartridge or assume that cartridge weight alone establishes fit. A stylus swap still calls for careful handling and the exact instructions.
Plan the phono stage and speakers
Connect RCA and ground to a compatible moving-magnet receiver or integrated-amplifier PHONO input. For powered speakers with line inputs, add an external phono stage first; passive speakers also need an amplifier or receiver. Follow both manuals for grounding, including any second ground lead from the stage. Do not connect phono-level output directly to AUX/LINE. The deck supplies neither amplification nor speakers, so plan for the stage if your receiver lacks PHONO.
Manual operation includes an imperfect end stop
Fluance lists a cue lever, auto-stop and a two-speed belt drive, while the manual shows the listener unlocking and cueing the arm by hand. Auto-stop is a platter stop, not full automation: the arm is not documented to start, lift, or return automatically. With the feature enabled, the manual estimates about 30 seconds for the platter to stop after a record ends and warns that some records may not trigger it correctly. The RT84 therefore suits someone comfortable placing and lifting the arm and willing to treat the stop as a convenience rather than unattended protection. It does not support 78 RPM.
Budget assembly room and check the dimensional discrepancy
The listed package includes a 2M Blue headshell, counterweight, metal platter and belt, rubber mat, cover hinges, bubble level, ground wire, RCA cable, power adapter and 45 adapter. Setup means fitting belt and platter, balancing the arm, setting force and anti-skate, leveling and wiring. Protect the stylus and follow the manual's sequence.
Fluance's current product page publishes a 16.5-inch width and 14.25-inch depth, with height listed as 6 inches ±0.5. The shared manual instead prints 16.5 × 13.75 × 5.5 inches; that older dimensional entry is not silently substituted for the current page's larger depth. Both are manufacturer figures, so verify the exact revision and allow extra room for cable bends, hand access and cover movement. The page's 14.99 lb / 6.8 kg pair converts consistently, but the older manual prints the same pounds beside 6.4 kg; weight is not used here as a comparison or matching field.
Who should shortlist the RT84?
Consider the current RT84 if you have a receiver PHONO input or plan for a separate stage, accept manual cueing, and want the documented 2M Blue plus aluminum-platter configuration. The RT83 provides the same basic PHONO planning but a 2M Red; the RT85 pairs a 2M Blue with acrylic. Pause if you need built-in preamplification, fully automatic arm handling, 78 RPM, speakers in the box or a known exact used-package history. Before buying, check RT84T versus RT84W, the cartridge and platter actually supplied, exact body depth, condition and all setup components. This is a source-based fit assessment, not a listening test, assembly trial, ownership report or assurance about current price or stock.
