Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can the AC/DC model work with powered speakers?
Yes, if the speakers accept line level and an MM-compatible phono stage sits between them and the turntable. The deck has no built-in stage, so do not connect its phono-level signal directly to ordinary powered-speaker LINE/AUX.
Explore this need in the finder →Does this turntable include a 78 rpm setting?
The manufacturer lists electronic 33 and 45 rpm; it does not document a 78 rpm arrangement. Do not assume it plays shellac at 78 without model-specific instructions.
Does the AC/DC turntable include a dust cover?
The exact-package evidence conflicts: the manufacturer does not list a cover as included, one U.S. seller lists it, and another describes a cover as separately purchased. Verify the precise seller SKU and written box contents before paying if the cover is important.
The Pro-Ject AC/DC Limited Edition is a manual belt-drive deck built around a lightning-bolt-shaped plinth and an illuminated platter assembly. This review analyzes manufacturer documents and exact U.S.-facing item records; it is not a claim of personal ownership, a listening test or a measured comparison.

What the lightning-bolt design actually changes
The deck's outline is a functional part of its shelf plan, not a conventional rectangle. Pro-Ject describes a 28 mm MDF plinth, heavy red 10 mm glass platter and acrylic sub-platter with LED lighting. Its straight 8.6-inch acrylic arm uses spring anti-skating, and the fitted cartridge is an Ortofon 2M Red moving magnet. Those choices make the turntable visually unlike a conventional flat base, but they do not justify claims about sound quality without a controlled comparison.
The specified drive is belt-driven and electronically switches between 33 and 45 rpm. The maker lists those two speeds; the sources reviewed here do not document a 78-rpm setup. The manual operation means the listener places and lifts the arm. The setup guide calls for assembling the platter and belt, balancing the tonearm, setting tracking force and leveling the three adjustable feet. If a short setup checklist is your priority, account for those steps rather than reading electronic speed switching as automatic playback.
Pair the 2M Red with an MM phono route
The exact U.S. item description states that the AC/DC has no built-in phono preamp. Its included Connect it Phono E RCA cable carries phono-level output; connect it to a receiver or integrated amplifier's PHONO input that supports a moving-magnet cartridge. If you use powered speakers or an amplifier with only AUX/LINE inputs, place an MM phono stage between the deck and that line input. Do not send the turntable straight to ordinary LINE and do not stack two phono stages.
This distinction prevents one common mismatch: the presence of RCA sockets is not the same as line-level output. The factory-adjusted 2M Red is the included package, so a replacement cartridge could change the electrical match. Check the receiving stage's cartridge type, loading and gain against the cartridge that will actually be installed.
Two package details need a careful seller check
The official specifications and U.S. Audio Advisor item identify the same model and list its 33/45 speeds, cartridge and 495 × 135 × 405 mm body. Their included-accessory lists do not include a dust cover, and the seller says a compatible Cover it Artist Collection cover is sold separately. However, the captured ListenUp page for this exact AC/DC model lists a dust cover in its item details. That is a real package-description conflict, not a fact to smooth over: ask the seller to confirm the exact SKU and written carton contents if a cover matters. Do not assume an online photograph or another dealer's bundle defines what you will receive.
Likewise, no reviewed source confirms a 78 rpm arrangement. If shellac playback is important, ask for exact AC/DC instructions that state a supported speed and required belt before buying; the absence of a documented 78 setup here is not proof that every possible accessory variant is impossible.
Allow for the unusual footprint
The model's published width is 495 mm, or about 19.49 inches, and depth is 405 mm, or about 15.94 inches. At half-inch quiz steps, it first passes body caps of 19.5 inches wide and 16 inches deep. That does not mean a shelf of those exact dimensions is a safe working space: allow for cable routing, the tonearm's sweep, record changes, the irregular plinth shape and the cover, if separately supplied. Pro-Ject lists a net mass of 6 kg, so the stand still needs to be stable and level.
The red illumination and exposed sub-platter make it natural to display, but a bright or visually elaborate deck does not solve the ordinary system requirement: it still needs speakers and a compatible phono stage. The body’s irregular points also make measuring a rectangular width/depth envelope more useful than comparing a single shelf photograph.
Who should keep it on the list
The AC/DC is worth considering if the lightning-bolt design is a central preference, the Ortofon 2M Red MM package fits your phono chain and you are happy to cue records manually. Its main tradeoffs are the lack of an internal phono preamp, an outsized outline compared with compact decks, a setup that remains user-operated, undocumented auto-stop and the cover-package inconsistency. Choose it for an exact, verified package—not because a retailer page shows a desirable accessory or the product name suggests a particular playing format.
Sources checked
Pro-Ject's AC/DC product page, official product-information sheet and setup guide support the model features and dimensions. The exact U.S.-facing Audio Advisor item documents its MM-only phono route; ListenUp's AC/DC item supplies a second U.S. package observation. No listed price, stock claim, reviewer sound claim or hands-on result is adopted.
