A useful fit for

A well-documented fit for an MM-compatible PHONO input or an added MM phono stage, with manual cueing, electronic 33/45 speed selection and three exact finish-only item records.

The main tradeoff

No built-in phono stage or documented full automation/auto-stop; 78-RPM claims conflict across inaccessible and current sources, and the heavy body plus roughly 18.3-by-13.8-inch conservative footprint needs extra access and cover clearance.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I connect the X8 Evolution Moonstone straight to powered speakers?

Not to a line input alone: this package has no built-in phono stage. Add a compatible MM phono stage between its phono output and the powered speakers' LINE/AUX input.

What input does the supplied Moonstone cartridge need?

The Sumiko Moonstone is an MM cartridge. Use a compatible MM PHONO input, or an external MM stage before a line input; Sumiko lists 3.0 mV output, 47 kΩ load, 100–200 pF capacitance and 2.0 g recommended force.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does this X8 package stop itself or return the arm at the end?

Do not count on that: the reviewed sources do not verify platter auto-stop or arm return. Its documented arm use is manual, so a required end-stop condition excludes it until the exact seller manual establishes otherwise.

Explore this need in the finder →
Should I buy this version to play 78 RPM records?

Not on the available record alone. The product-sheet and current X8-family speed lists say 33/45, while an earlier U.S. manual search record also lists 78; the manual cannot now be re-opened as a PDF. Verify the exact package, setup and suitable stylus before treating 78 playback as supported.

Explore this need in the finder →
How much shelf width and depth does the turntable body need?

The conservative finder values are 18.31 inches wide and 13.8125 inches deep. They clear the available 18.5-inch and 14-inch maximum steps; add extra room for the cover, cables, arm access and support surface.

This review covers the U.S.-facing Pro-Ject X8 Evolution package listed with a pre-mounted Sumiko Moonstone moving-magnet cartridge, in Piano Black, White or Walnut. It is distinct from the newer global X8 B, whose different cartridge package is not imported here. This is a document-led assessment, not a report of ownership, listening, testing or measurement.

Three observed finish items

The retailer records separately identify the three finishes. No functional difference is established; these images show appearance only, not a later offer's box contents or availability.

A substantial manual deck, not a plug-and-play all-in-one

The X8 Evolution's appeal is its unusually substantial mechanical platform: the manufacturer information describes a 5.1 kg lathed aluminum platter with TPE damping, an MDF chassis, height-adjustable damped feet and a one-piece 9cc Evolution carbon-fiber tonearm. The listed turntable mass is about 15 kg. These are construction details, not proof of a particular audible result. They do suggest practical tradeoffs: plan a stable, level surface and a careful unpacking route, rather than treating this as a light deck to move casually between rooms.

The belt drive changes electronically between 33⅓ and 45 RPM. It is manually operated: the record and arm are handled by the listener. A retailer's exact-item information labels the X8 Evolution as manual, and its product description documents a finger-operated arm lift. If automatic start, end-of-side lift or arm return is essential, this is the wrong shortlist entry. The reviewed sources do not verify an automatic platter stop, so the finder does not count it as stop-equipped.

Choose the phono route before choosing the finish

The U.S. retailer identifies the supplied Moonstone as a moving-magnet cartridge, and Sumiko's own specification lists 3.0 mV output, 47 kΩ load impedance, 100–200 pF capacitance and a 1.8–2.2 g tracking-force range with 2.0 g recommended. The X8 package has no built-in phono preamp. Connect it to a receiver or integrated amplifier's compatible MM PHONO input, or put a compatible MM phono stage between the turntable and powered speakers or a line input on an amplifier. A powered speaker's AUX/LINE socket alone is not a phono input.

This ordinary route matters more than the word “balanced” in product descriptions. The X8's five-pin output is supplied with a 5P-to-RCA phono cable for the standard connection. Pro-Ject describes a separate 5P-to-XLR cable and a compatible balanced phono stage as the optional route to its “True Balanced” arrangement. Neither the upgrade cable nor a suitable balanced stage should be assumed included in the Moonstone package. The cartridge's moving-magnet type and output also matter: do not treat the optional balanced connection as permission to connect the turntable directly to a line input.

One unresolved speed detail is a reason to check, not to guess

The U.S. product listing and Pro-Ject's currently accessible X8-family page specify 33⅓ and 45 RPM. A browser-indexed result for the older U.S. owner's manual instead includes 78 RPM in its technical speed list. The corresponding Pro-Ject USA manual and product-information URLs now redirect to the manufacturer's home page when fetched directly; I could not re-open either as a PDF to determine whether the 78 entry applies to the reviewed Moonstone package or how it is achieved. Because the documents disagree, this review does not promise 78-RPM playback. Confirm the actual instructions and any required setup with the seller before buying for 78s.

Allow for the cover and the room around the deck

Crutchfield lists the exact X8 Evolution at 18.25 inches wide by 13.8125 inches deep with the cover down. The current global X8 B page lists a 465 × 150 × 350 mm closed-body figure—about 18.31 × 5.91 × 13.78 inches—but it is not the older U.S. Moonstone package. Because the reports differ slightly, the finder uses the larger width and depth: 18.31 by 13.8125 inches. The body first clears the half-inch caps at 18.5 inches wide and 14 inches deep. Allow more room for the raised cover, cables, arm access and handling; these figures are not clearance measurements.

Who should keep it on the list

The X8 Evolution is a coherent candidate for someone who wants a heavy, manually cued belt-drive deck, values a supplied Moonstone MM cartridge and already has—or is prepared to add—the right phono stage. It is not an answer to a requirement for an integrated preamp, full automation or documented auto-stop. It also asks for more shelf width and handling effort than compact automatic models. Finish selection is cosmetic in the reviewed evidence; choose among the exact black, white and walnut item records without assuming a different feature set.

Before placing an order, confirm that the carton is the Moonstone-equipped X8 Evolution rather than a no-cartridge option or the newer X8 B, verify the requested finish and the included 5P-to-RCA lead, and check whether a compatible MM stage is present in your chain. Ask for the correct package-specific manual if 78-RPM capability or optional balanced wiring is decisive. No price, stock state, listening result or claim of hands-on setup is part of this assessment.

Documents and exact-item records checked

The exact Black, White and Walnut retailer item records establish the U.S. Moonstone package, manual operation and body figures. Sumiko's Moonstone specifications provide cartridge setup values. Pro-Ject's current X8 B page is a separate newer-family reference. The older U.S. PDF links now redirect; the 78-RPM discrepancy remains unresolved.
