Comparison

U-Turn Orbit Basic, Plus, Special, Custom and Theory: current model differences

The current U-Turn Orbit Basic, Plus and Special share a manual two-speed belt-drive foundation; Orbit Theory adds a different arm and selectable cartridge, finish and preamp packages. The separately listed Orbit Plus Turntable (Gen 1) is an older OA2/acrylic package, not a finish choice for current OA3 models. The configurable Orbit Custom is now individually resolved: its page exposes seven selector groups, and the black OA3 single-unit image is a specific example rather than a universal build. This is a current-family comparison, not a complete historical Orbit catalogue or proof of live seller stock.

Compare the actual included hardware

  • Orbit Basic: Audio-Technica AT91B moving-magnet cartridge with a conical diamond stylus, grooved MDF platter, and manual belt movement to change 33/45 RPM. Its cue lever is optional.
  • Current Orbit Plus: Ortofon OM5E with an elliptical diamond stylus and a grooved acrylic platter; it still uses a manual belt move for speed changes, and its cue lever is optional.
  • Orbit Custom: one configurable OA3 family with five moving-magnet cartridge choices, MDF or acrylic platter, manual belt or electronic 33/45 control, optional cue lever, optional None/Built-in Pluto 2 stage, and rubber or Iso-Level feet. The exact image is the black MDF/manual-speed illustration; the seller's selected cartridge and hidden preamp choice need separate confirmation.
  • Orbit Special: Ortofon 2M Red with elliptical stylus, grooved acrylic platter, included cue lever and electronic 33/45 selector. The speed knob changes platter speed, not tonearm automation.
  • Orbit Theory: selectable Ortofon 2M Blue, Bronze or Black, grooved acrylic platter, OA3 Pro tonearm with adjustable counterweight and anti-skate, included cue lever, electronic 33/45 selector and adjustable aluminum/Sorbothane feet. Walnut, Ebonized Oak or Oak finish and None/Built-in Pluto 2 preamp options are separately identified; the exact package determines the cartridge force setting and phono route.
  • Orbit Plus Turntable (Gen 1): the maker's separate first-generation package has an OA2 gimbal arm, OM5E cartridge, acrylic platter, and two black preamp SKUs. SKU 100BKAOR5 omits the built-in stage; SKU 160BKAOR5 includes it. The Gen 1 platter has a flat edge rather than the Gen 2 belt groove, so verify generation before sourcing replacement parts.

U-Turn publishes the same 16.75 × 12.5 × 4.25-inch body for all five current Orbit models discussed here and the separate Gen 1 Plus. The manufacturer FAQ says Orbit models use only 33⅓ and 45 RPM; none should be selected for documented 78 RPM support. It describes manual arm use without automatic return or lift. The exact Custom and Gen 1 pages/guides do not document platter auto-stop; that separate behavior remains unverified rather than inferred from the manual arm routine. Published dimensions describe the body, not wall, cable, cover or cueing clearance.

Match the optional phono stage to your equipment

All five current model pages present a None or Built-in stage choice, while the Gen 1 Plus listing separately offers Black / None SKU 100BKAOR5 and Black / Built-in SKU 160BKAOR5. Custom's public product JSON does not expose selector-combination SKUs, so check each option on the actual offer. With None selected, a compatible receiver/integrated-amplifier PHONO input can supply the phono stage. A line-input powered-speaker system instead needs an external phono stage between turntable and speakers; passive speakers need an amplifier after that external stage.

With the built-in phono stage selected and enabled, use a powered speaker’s analog line input or an amplifier/receiver LINE/AUX input. The Gen 1 setup guide says its equipped stage can be bypassed; the current Gen 2 guide explains the switch and indicator for equipped models. Do not feed an already-equalized line output into a receiver PHONO input. Receiver PHONO, external stage to powered speakers, external stage plus amp/passive speakers, and built-in-stage line output are different chains; check actual input labels and selector settings before ordering:

Decide how much manual handling is acceptable

Basic, current Plus and Gen 1 Plus use manual belt movement for speed; Special and Theory change speed electronically. Custom can be built either way. All six current and Gen 1 setups still need manual tonearm handling. A cue lever is optional on Basic, current Plus and Custom, while Special and Theory list one as included; Gen 1 offer-level cue status is not established. Electronic speed selection is not automatic arm operation. The Orbit FAQ rules out automatic arm return and lift; an end-stop requirement still calls for an exact manual that documents that feature.

For more detail than this family comparison can provide, see each assessment: Basic explains the AT91B/MDF package; current Plus covers its OA3/OM5E/acrylic choices; Custom separates the seven configuration selectors and the black image example; Plus Gen 1 documents the distinct OA2 model and exact preamp SKUs; Special covers its included cue lever and electronic speed change; Theory separates its cartridge/setup choices and optional preamp routes, with a Theory setup guide for the corresponding maker force settings. Before buying, confirm exact model/generation, finish, cartridge, platter, speed control, stage state, cue lever, feet, stylus condition, package contents, power adapter and shelf clearance. No live offer, retailer stock or transaction price is established by this comparison.
